Public Citizen Takes on British Petroleum

by Gary Gwilliam on August 20, 2010

The following is an impassioned update from Tyson Slocum, Director of the Energy and Climate Program of Public Citizen, about  their efforts to pursue justice in the British Petroleum Gulf oil spill disaster. Many families have lost their livelihoods, people have been seriously injured, and some killed during the oil rig explosion.

Public Citizen’s Fight Against BP

According to Tyson Slocum, Public Citizen has “registered a number of successes this summer” including:

  • Citizen’s Arrest: Public Citizen issued a citizen’s arrest for BP CEO Tony Hayward helping to lead the charge that eventually resulted in Hayward’s departure from BP
  • Oil Spill Legislation: Public Citizen worked closely with Congress on legislation that would “vastly improve” regulatory oversight over oil industry deep water drilling
  • BP Responsibility: Public Citizen will continue to focus on BP according to Slocum to ensure they are “held criminally and financially responsible for paying for all of the crimes in the Gulf.  .  .  not only the corporation but individuals at the company”

Tells what you think of Mr. Slocum’s video. If you want to help by adding your voice to this effort, contact Public Citizen for more details.
